Franchises and chains guide

What packaging budget should you plan per location?

A location's packaging budget is not guessed, it is calculated. Three figures are enough: the number of takeaway orders, the number of packaging pieces per order, and the average unit price. You already have the first two.

The calculation in three lines

Take a location serving sixty takeaway orders a day, twenty-six days a month. That is 1,560 orders a month. If each order leaves with three pieces of packaging, a bag, a box and a sheet of paper, the location consumes 4,680 pieces a month, around 56,000 a year. Multiply by your average unit price and you have your annual budget. Run the calculation reference by reference rather than on an average: the price gaps between a sheet of paper and a box are considerable.

What moves the unit price

Four factors, always the same: the product itself, the quantity produced in one run, the number of printing colours and the finish. The second is the one a network has the most leverage on.

Why the network changes the price category

Take the location from the previous calculation, with its 56,000 pieces a year. On its own, it negotiates on that volume. In a network of ten identical addresses, the pooled volume passes 560,000 pieces a year, and it is no longer the same conversation with a factory. The location consumes exactly the same thing, but it no longer pays the same price.

The budget lines people forget

The launch costs of a new reference, billed once on the first production run. Transport, when it is not included. And the cost of storage, which appears on no invoice but occupies square metres rented at city-centre prices.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a customised package cost per unit?

It depends on the product, the quantity, the number of colours and the finish. The unit price falls as the run grows; that is the most decisive factor.

Should packaging be budgeted monthly or yearly?

Calculate consumption over the year, because annual volume is what determines the production price. Payment, on the other hand, can follow the orders.

Does storage really cost anything?

Yes, even though it appears on no invoice. Pallets in a city-centre store room occupy rented space that could serve another purpose.

How can we cut the packaging budget without changing supplier?

Start by cutting the number of references. Two bag formats can often become one, the run doubles, and the unit price falls.
